Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to allow parents to sleep close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. However, they are only recommended for use up to 6 months of age when your baby will be required to move into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, loved the feature that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that can be used all around the house. It also features the ability to rock manually. It was easy to set up and came with its own travel bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size, with cots being smaller than cot beds. They also can be converted into toddler beds, while they are typically used up to three years older. If you’re looking for a wooden cot, you’ll find two sizes to choose from that are large and standard both of which will convert into a toddler bed or cot mattress. If you’d like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it’s an excellent idea to pick the larger one.

Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested the product at home, said she liked that it was a bit bigger than the typical Moses’ basket but still not too big for the room of her baby. She says that it is easy to get the baby in and out of the cot during night feeds or for soothing and that it’s quality is superior to others she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.

Emily who is a home tester, loves the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi lora – it is a lift-off, mobile bassinet. It also is a rock. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is a perfect fit for a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means that you do not need to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.

Height

When selecting a cot for the bed, look for one that can be raised up to a height that’s comfortable for you when feeding babies. It also needs to be able of being dropped down out of the way to allow you to lift your baby towards you for night feeds or to soothe. This feature is especially helpful if you’re recovering from a C-section. For instance the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is how low you want the base of your cot. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their infants from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest point, while some prefer a higher level to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a well-liked option, with one of our mum testers stating that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that is easy to push down with the click of the button.

Be aware that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should only be used until your baby is able to hold their head without assistance, usually at approximately 6 months. This is due to the risk of inhaling suffocation. It’s also important to know that if you choose a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a cot and vice versa, you must start removing the sides when your child is able to do this to ensure they don’t get out of bed or fall out of the bed.

Design

There are many styles of cribs that are bedside, ranging from basic to extravagant. The more expensive options could include features such as a built-in nightlight or a soothing center that plays sounds and music and comes with two levels of vibration to help soothe baby back to sleep, or even the swivelling base which allows you to easily reach your baby for feedings. There are also models that can be transformed into a cot bed or toddler bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to move to their own bigger bed.

For example, the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards for the Best Crib, Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that lets you take your baby and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get out of bed. This is perfect for new mums recovering from Caesarean sections, or those who need to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. MFM mom home tester Jasmine loved this feature, saying it was easy to use and made reaching her baby easier – especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and a rocking bedside crib feature. It’s a bit bigger than some of the other cribs for bed we’ve looked at, but it folds flat into its travel bag, so it’s quite compact when not in use.

MFM mom home test Leya also liked the functionality of this crib for bed, explaining how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is very easy to move and extremely sturdy. Its swivelling base is fantastic because it lets you move the bassinet side to side, and one of its sides can be opened down to make access easier – particularly for new mums who are recovering from C-sections,’ she added.

Safety

A large bedside cot sale cot’s main security characteristic is that it can easily be moved up or down so that parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or his or her nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from the c-section. Find a model that allows you to lower one side at the push of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without needing to get out of the bed. This is particularly crucial as your baby grows older and more mobile. You’ll also want to not add anything to the crib that could increase the risk of suffocation or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to issues with the product that include gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer disassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, such as the requirement that they satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements were not feasible or effective in reducing the amount of instances where infants are trapped between a bedside rail and an adult bed.

A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to other types of use, such as play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative clause to the proposed rule for bedside cot for twins sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable. Attachments can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be released in November of 2021.
