Choosing upvc window replacement hinges (my company)
Selecting and fitting upvc windows replacement hinges isn’t as complicated as you might imagine. Make sure the arrows on the hinges are facing the correct direction and measure the thickness of the hinge arms on the frame opening (13mm or17mm).
There are many different types of hinges to choose from, each with unique features. This article will go over the most popular uPVC hinges, as well as their advantages.
Egress/Easy Clean Hinge
These windows are an excellent choice to replace or upgrade your fire escape safety window as they open to a full 90 degree angle. They can be disengaged to a ‘easy-clean’ position which allows you to get access to the windows’ exterior without the need to climb ladders or lean at risky angles.

They can be moved to the clean position by pressing in the small button and moving the window hinges replacement sash to one side. After closing, the window sash will return to its original position.
They are available in 13mm and 17mm stack heights. Based on the size of your existing window, we suggest using our Egress Selection Guide to determine which product is best for your needs.
These hinges can be used with standard side-hung frames made of aluminum or uPVC. The friction screw is used to adjust the resistance. This makes it easier to open the window hinge repairs and reduces the possibility of a mishap during strong winds. They have been tested for over thirty thousand cycles, and they are compliant with British Standards approved BS EN 130126-6:2008 and BBA/Secured by Design.
The Nico Egress Easy Clean friction hinge is easy to operate and has no buttons or catches. It provides a convenient and safe option for emergency exits and cleaning. Firstly, open the aluminium window hinges to the egress (full opening) position and then press the hinge retaining clip that is located on the inner side of the bottom corner. This will open both the bottom and top catches and allow you to move the sash towards the clean position. Once in the easy-clean position close the window to reset the hinges back to their original position.
Fire-Escape Hinge
Fire Escape Hinges, often known as “Easy Clean” hinges are used to replace side opening windows to allow egress (fire safety) reasons. They allow for an opening larger in the event of fire. This type of hinge is required in any habitable room that has a window, as stipulated by building regulations.
The windows feature an elongated friction that permits the windows to open up to 90 degrees. They also allow the opening sash to slide across the glass when it is opened, allowing for easy cleaning without having to climb ladders. The hinges are simple to operate and don’t have complicated buttons or catchers. They can be operated from the inside of the home using a safe, simple lever.
The hinges, made in the UK by Cotswold, come with the safety of children in every day use. This can be removed by an invisible button. You’ll have peace of peace of mind knowing that your children won’t open the windows too far. They are available in 13mm or 17mm stack heights.
Measure the length of the current side-hung window hinge, which is fixed to the frame. (See the guide on measuring the length of upvc window hinges). Choose the proper size hinge below.
Please note that this measurement is taken at the part of the hinge that is attached to the frame, not the sash. The actual length of the hinge could be shorter or longer dependent on how the old windows were manufactured. When choosing the size of your hinge, most upvc windows will fit a 13mm stack height. However, should your old window frame has 17mm, then select the option that fits this. Alternatively you can fit the 4mm packer to make up the difference. All hinges come in two different directions (1 left and one right). The hinges are not equipped with screws. If required, these can be purchased separately. Our upvc window repair screws are highly recommended. They are specially designed to improve the performance of your hinges, allowing them to operate efficiently for a longer. They have a reduced-friction design and an enhanced weather seal with an encapsulated nylon reducer cap.
Restricted Hinge
Standard hinges can make it difficult to open a window completely. These child safety friction hinges are a great way to solve this problem. They can be used in situations where ventilation is required but cleaning or escape from a fire is not feasible. They work by restricting the amount that the sash can open and allow the to override this restriction by pressing the push of a button. They are suitable for both side and top-hung windows and are available in 13mm and 17mm stack heights.
The Nico Restricted Egress Friction Hinge combines the features of a standard restrictor and a fire escape hinge to provide an efficient and easy way to meet building regulations. It is suitable for side-hung and top opening uPVC windows and is available in 17mm and 13mm stack heights. It is offered in a pair, where one hinge is the restricted egress, the other unrestricted, allowing one hinge to be placed at the bottom of the sash while the other is fitted to the top.
These uPVC restricting hinges have been tested to BS6375 Part 2. They are intended to be used on windows that isn’t able to be fully opened, such as a small children’s bedroom. The mechanism limits how far the sash opens to an appropriate height of 100mm, and re-engages once the window hinge replacement is shut.
These uPVC friction-type hinges can be used with any type of windows. They are particularly useful for windows that are hard to reach, such as those in three-storey homes or those that require ladders. They can be complemented by our security enhancements like hinge guards, protection plates for hinges or dog bolts for PAS 24 performance.
It is essential to measure the hinge on your current window in order to get replacements of the same size. This can be done by looking at the picture gallery of the hinge before deciding the best place to put it. The top-hung hinges can only be placed on one side, while the side-hung hinges can only be placed on one side.
Standard Hinge
Standard hinges use metal-to-metal connections and do not require any extra parts to reduce friction. It comes in a variety of finishes and also comes with an NFPA-certified fire rating. To determine the radius of your hinge put it on its flat surface and align the quarter and dime in two corners. If the quarter fits better then the corner should be turned to 5/8 inches.
Selecting the right hinge can be the difference between making or breaking your door’s appearance. It’s essential to match the style and finish of your door with the hinges to create a unified appearance that is both practical and visually attractive.
