Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
Item upgrades allow players to increase the level of equippable items like weapons or armor, as well as trinkets up to a certain amount. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

The game should provide more information on its compare interface regarding the upgrade, for example: “X stats gained, or X stats lost.” This isn’t feasible to implement due to the complexity of the comparison process. However, most upgrade components can’t be salvaged or replaced, unless by using an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. These can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.
Upgrades to an item upgrader mod can cost gold and/or Dilithium depending on the item type. In addition, some upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of crests or Flightstones needed to upgrade an item depends on the gear’s level and the maximum upgrade level is set by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level are costly especially when upgrading PvE equipment.
Upgrades can also alter a weapon’s ammunition or damage die size. They also can alter its special weapon properties like its bulky or operational property, or hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of the weapon.
Before you make a decision it is important to consider the costs involved in upgrading an item. Spend your gold on rare items and not on items of the common or magic tier. These items are not worth upgrading, and rare items will soon surpass them.
Ask your guild members for their opinions if you are unsure whether upgrading is worth the cost. You may be able to get better upgrades for less cost. It’s a good idea to upgrade your equipment as soon as you can, because upgrades will become more costly as time passes. If you can’t afford the upgrade costs it might be better to hold off. This allows you to maximize your potential.
